The face behind Essies Animals

Meet the Owner

Essies Animals is run by Esmée van Sermond, whose love for animals started with the aquarium hobby in late 2019. What began as a curiosity about aquatic life soon turned into a rewarding hobby and a real passion for animal care. Learning about fish, water quality, and the different needs of each species made the hobby even more meaningful. In late 2021, she discovered the amazing world of reptiles, and her interest quickly grew into a lifelong love.

With plenty of support and encouragement from her parents, Esmée turned her bedroom into a dedicated reptile room in 2021. It gave her the space to learn more about reptile care, explore proper husbandry, and create comfortable, suitable homes for her growing collection. Since then, her collection has grown not only in size, but also in the variety of species she cares for, each with its own unique needs and personality.

Today, Essies Animals is run by Esmée with the help of her partner, J, who has been part of the aquarium hobby since 2008. Together, they care for a wonderful mix of reptiles, fish, insects, and mammals, including ferrets. Animal welfare, responsible care, and always learning something new are at the heart of everything they do. After moving in together in the summer of 2026, J and Esmée turned their small apartment into a cosy animal-filled space, surrounded by reptiles, fish, and mammals in beautiful enclosures where every animal gets the very best care, attention, and a home suited to its needs.
